Light in the Abyss is a Science Fiction novel that introduces the reader into the lives of two Naval Officers: Executive Officer Liam Blackwood and Petty Officer Amelia Virtue. The book begins with Liam and Amelia, along with their crew on the HMSS Daring. The crew was sent by his Imperial Majesty to retrieve a very substantial artifact to the Nobles, the suncatcher. This artifact was stolen by a very well known theropod thief, Shordar. His Imperial Majesty has commanded the HMSS crew to retrieve the suncatcher from this incongruous creature before their window of time to get it back  is lost. When the team first encounters Shordar’s army, Liam's love for Amelia grabs a hold of him and he attacks the aliens which leads to Amelia and another crew member getting severely hurt. After this mistake, they regain the location of Shordar and his goons. Liam and Amelia’s relationship is put on the line as he continues to ruin missions because he is putting Officer Virtue’s safety before everyone else's. This assignment is a very important mission in Liam’s life. However, he must also battle with: Is he going to put everyone else on the line for Amelia? Or is he going to allow Amelia to protect herself and get that suncatcher before it's too late?

Opinion:

This novel was riveting.  The writing style made you feel for the characters and it really helped me develop a will to keep turning the page and find out what happens next. This book was not only an unpredictable adventure, it was also a must read romance. I loved that Amelia was a confident, mature young woman who followed her dreams and realized that she doesn’t need a man in her life to keep her going. I also really enjoyed Liam as he was self-disciplined enough to know what is good for him, even if it is hard sometimes. The third person point of view does bother me just the slightest because it is very hard to stay attached to a character and their thoughts and feelings. This was a fast-paced book, but there are areas where I feel like it fell away a little bit. When describing events leading up to a main event, the details started to run on.  When I was starting this book, I will admit that it was a little hard to keep track of the characters and associate first and last names. Other than names, the writing style was easy to understand and really innovative. It really brought thought-provoking questions to my head and let my imagination run wild.
