Maddy and Grace have made a new friend named Mia! Together, they are brainstorming short trips to take during their summer vacation when Mia suggests going to the zoo. That way they can see the many types of animals in their habitats. The girls agree that going to the zoo would be a fun idea and ask Maddy's parents to take them. Maddy's parents agree, and the next weekend the girls visit the zoo. They are shocked to see that what was once a beautiful and lively home for animals is now a bleak place with no visitors. The zookeeper explained that after COVID, fewer visitors caused the zoo not to have enough money to pay for the upkeep of the zoo. Because of this, the animals weren't taken care of and the animals now spent all day in their dens. Maddy, Grace, and Mia decide that they must do something to help the zoo turn back into a vibrant and happy place. They try running a lemonade stand, but the only customers are their friends and family. Will Maddy, Grace, and Mia be able to help save the zoo?

Opinion:

Maddy and Grace Save the Zoo is a captivating picture book about the importance of working hard to help the people and places you care about. The story really shows how even young kids like Maddy, Grace, and Mia can make big differences in their communities with the use of hard work and wanting to help.  Just like Maddy, Grace, and Mia, kids can help build community after events like COVID.  In helping save the zoo, Maddy, Grace, and Mia gave the community around them a way to gather and spend time together. The book also shows how it is important to stick with something even if it does not work out right away.  Despite the girl's lemonade stand not working out as well as they hoped right away, they stuck with it and it paid off in the end! The colorful illustrations throughout the book help portray the different scenes. This book would be great for a child who wants to read a longer picture book or wants to practice reading independently!
