All eleven-year-old Lexie wants is to leave Portland, Oregon and travel to San Francisco, California. Her strict grandparents, whom Lexie is living with, want her to grow up to be a proper lady. Lexie just wants to be with her Mama, in San Francisco. However, Mama’s new husband doesn’t think Lexie should stay with parents who work all night and sleep all day. Lexie’s class at school is raising money to send a doll to the children of Japan to try and keep peace and prevent a war. They are having a contest to see who can write the best letter to accompany 1 of 12,0000 dolls. Whoever wins gets to see the dolls off from a dock in San Francisco. Lexie just has to win; will she be able to write the best letter? Read Ship of Dolls to find out!

Opinion:

This book is extremely entertaining and will have you on the edge of your seat until the end. The setting is Portland, Oregon in 1926. The main character, Lexie, is eleven. Even though she is fictional, the way the book is written truly helps you feel and understand what she is feeling. Lexie seems realistic and is easy to relate to. When she writes the letter, her perseverance is obvious and sets a good example of what everyone should do. Written for girls, ages 10 to 13, Ship of Dolls will definitely become one of your favorites!
