Paul Carpetti seems to have his life already figured out.  He is going to work at the local mill for the rest of his life and marry his girlfriend Kathy.  The only problem? He hates his job at the mill and doesn’t love Kathy, but can’t seem to find a way to get out of the inevitable marriage.  This all changes when Duke Walczak, a fellow Jack Kerouac admirer, convinces Paul to accompany him on a road trip to Florida in search for the legendary On the Road author.  This may be just the escape Paul was looking for, and this trip may be more eye opening than he expected.

Opinion:

This book is one of a rare breed, as it combines a fantastic plot with a focus on a literary hero that has been much admired over the years.  It also gives light to the desire that so many young people have to escape the lives they are living for adventure and passion.  It provides an opportunity for those of us now with this passion to discover what is unknown to us to connect with someone with the same desire fifty years ago.  Extremely entertaining and intelligent, Barbara Shoup’s Looking For Jack Kerouac, has earned a spot on my bookshelf and in my heart.
