Kid Lit: An Introduction to Literary Criticism provides teachers, students, and life learners a concise examination of the elements used in the most admirable literature worthy of dissecting. The “Lit Crit Toolbox” provides contemporary and classic examples to clarify the literary criticism vocabulary imparting readers with exactly what is necessary to analyze the literature in question.  Mr. Durwood magnifies the depth of his instruction throughout Kid Lit with essays by scholars, interviews, lists of best practices, and challenges for teachers and students.  He mentions that research composes the bulk of his students’ grades.   Kid Lit: An Introduction to Literary Criticism invigorates readers and writers to rigorous research as they incorporate the “Lit Crit Toolbox” into their literary explorations regardless of the reward.

Opinion:

Kid Lit: An Introduction to Literary Criticism is priceless resource for readers, writers, teachers, students, and life learners.  Mr.  Durwood takes the fundamental elements of literary criticism to a depth that not only challenges those who are learning to scrutinize what they read, but also provides guidelines for aspiring authors.   Reading Kid Lit: An Introduction to Literary Criticism is the first step.  Putting the “Tools” into practice is a project worthy of anticipation.  I highly recommend Kid Lit: An Introduction to Literary Criticism for those searching for a deeper understanding of the stories which potentialy shape our ideas and ideals.

There is nothing offensive for younger readers, but a good part of Kid Lit: Am Introduction to Literary Criticism is over the heads of most children who are still young enough to just enjoy the stories. I would recommend this book for high school students - adults.
