Harry the Camel is a heartwarming story perfect for young readers to learn about different types of animals outside of the US and to learn about the unique gifts everyone possesses. The children's book begins with Harry the camel near the racehorse track in the desert. He so badly wishes he could run fast and smooth like a horse, but he has a hump on his back! When he notices another type of four-legged animal, he feels sorry for that animal's differences as well. Then Harry's bird friend tells him that the other animal is supposed to look the way he does because he is a zebra! After Harry finds an unexpected friend in the desert, he learns that he possesses unique gifts and strengths that no other animal has! Harry is different and special in his own way just the way he is!

Opinion:

Harry the Camel is a perfect book for young readers who feel different from others around them. Not only does the story contain elements of adventure, self identity, and culture, but the characters possess unique qualities that enhance the book. Harry is a young camel who wishes he was different and like other animals, but he finds out that his differences make him special. This character development in the plot is a prime example for young children learning to accept themselves. In addition to the story and the character development, the book also has warm illustrations that depict the desert in a comforting way even with a dangerous sandstorm! This element enhances the comforting nature of the book and highlights the themes of confidence and self acceptance in a clear light for young readers.
