LitPick Review
In the world where people doubt everything that gets published, professional psychic debunker Gerald Agee was popular. Every week, on the Debunker's Challenge, a group of supernaturalists participated, ready to show what they’ve got. The judges kept refusing to give the three million dollars prize just for Agee's reputation and to protect the finances of the organization . Craig Herbert who is the Executive Field Producer travels to find a Tennessee woman called Betty Ann Crawford who is said to have great psychic abilities. Just after he was finally able to get Betty to California for the Debunker's Challenge, he started having strange dreams and a previous contestant also disappeared. Betty performed excellently, but the show’s creator tried everything possible to make her abilities worthless, using logic. Craig Herbert finds himself trying to solve the mystery of how the organization successfully works. As he digs deeper into secrets that surrounds the challenge, he is confronted with visions of his own missing brother and a burning desire to see the supposed abilities of the enigmatic Betty Ann Crawford.
Opinion:
Debunked by Beth Perry is a skillfully-written, psychological story that has both mystery and suspense. The author thoughtfully took us through the story of the main character, Craig Herbert, from a “doubting Thomas” to a believer as he encountered Betty Ann Crawford, a psychic who impressed him with her abilities but also forced him to face his fears. Craig felt really responsible for what happened to his little brother, and he tried avoiding any conversation that led to him talking about his brother. I felt the pain because I was also in a similar situation. I’m grateful Beth Perry showed us that part of him, and it gave me closure. Just as Craig thought his brother was taken by someone who is in need of a child, someone with a loving heart, I’ve come to accept my own situation in that way.
Talking about the suspense, I was kind of skeptical if Betty Ann would make it to the show because to me she felt reluctant. Also, I was concerned about the contestant that went missing, and I wanted to know how and why this happened. The book was a really good one, and it kept getting more interesting with each page; I couldn’t stop reading.
