LitPick Review
Can Elephants Wear Masks is a story for young readers that covers the challenges that young children faced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Gabby, the kindergartener, experiences her own frustrations at school with wearing a mask to protect herself and her classmates. As the story progresses, Gabby’s teacher supports Gabby and the other students by encouraging them to use their imaginations to make wearing masks more fun. By the end of the story, readers learn that following rules to protect others can be fun and creative.
Opinion:
Can Elephants Wear Masks examines a great lesson that readers should learn. The author teaches readers that while following rules is necessary, rules also offer an opportunity to be creative. Not only does the book offer a valuable lesson to readers, but the story also incorporates vivid and rounded characters in Gabby, her kindergarten teacher, and her stuffed elephant. Also, the author incorporates diversity into the characters and illustrations that will make all readers feel represented. Even though the safety lesson of the book could have been much stronger and the grammatical mistakes fewer, Can Elephants Wear Masks is a bedtime story that will teach readers that creativity is important in life.
