LitPick Review
Charlie was the greatest racehorse and now while he’s retired, he’s enjoying spending his time on the family farm with his best friend, Fluff, the rabbit. They go on fun adventures on the trails near the forest and love spending time together. He even shares his stall with Fluff. But the one thing that Charlie loves just as much as Fluff is chocolate. Since Fluff is allowed into Farmer Ray’s house, Charlie has convinced Fluff to bring him a piece of chocolate whenever he can. He has eaten so much chocolate that he’s now gained weight.
One time while Fluff was in Farmer Ray’s house, he overheard him talking to his wife. He was saying that Charlie needed to run a race and win in order to help save the farm. Otherwise, they were going to lose the farm. When Fluff told Charlie what he heard, Charlie knew he wasn’t ready to race like he used to. He gained too much weight in retirement and he was worried he might not be ready to race to save the farm. So Charlie and Fluff set out on a mission to get Charlie back into racing shape again. What plan do they come up with to get Charlie ready to race again? Does the plan work?
Opinion:
I loved this adorable story because you first see how close Charlie and Fluff’s relationship was. I feel this teaches children that you can be friends with others who are different than you and even though you are both uniquely different, you can have a great friendship together. You never would think that a racehorse and a rabbit would be best friends, but Ms. Nicole did a wonderful job showing how diversity can be a wonderful thing between two very different animals.
I enjoyed seeing how Charlie was willing to help Farmer Ray and his wife out by getting race ready again. Even though Charlie wasn’t in the physical shape he should be in to run the race, he and Fluff came up with a plan to get him as ready as possible because too much was riding on losing the farm they both loved. I feel this teaches children that if you put your mind to something important and you work hard enough at it, you can accomplish anything in the end.
Although there was no illustrator listed by name, the illustrations provided on every other page were a delight to look at. Each picture was colorful in design and perfectly told the story in picture form. I especially loved the renderings of Charlie and Fluff because they made me smile when I looked at the whimsical drawing of both animals. Readers will easily get pulled in looking at each picture because there were so many details to each illustration for them to enjoy. They were just as much a delight to enjoy as was reading Charlie and Fluff’s story!
Overall, An Apple A Day is the perfect children’s book to read to the child in your life because it teaches lessons in diversity among friends and how important hard work is to achieving your goals. They will equally enjoy reading the story and looking at the whimsical illustrations provided throughout this delightful book. This children’s book comes highly recommended!
