LitPick Review
Fuzwald and Rex, two adorable guinea pigs, live an ordinary life with their family by day, but when night falls, these two furry companions turn into superheroes because of special food the family feeds them, Guinea Pig Power Chow. The family thinks they are feeding them healthy, delicious food, but unbeknownst to them they are actually feeding them superpower food which helps Fuzwald and Rex turn into caped crusaders. They help kittens stuck in trees and even stop angry squirrels from brawling with each other. Does their family ever realize they have two special superheroes in the family?
Opinion:
This children’s story was absolutely adorable in every way! I loved how Mr. St. James introduced Fuzwald and Rex to be ordinary guinea pigs to their family, but at night they took on special powers and became superheroes saving their town from any crime or discord happening. I feel children will not only fall in love with these two furballs, but want to be like them and turn into superheroes to help their neighbors as well. Fuzwald and Rex make children feel that although you may look ordinary on the outside, on the inside each one is a superhero waiting to shine. Stories like this build confidence in children that they can be anything they want to be. The sky is the limit.
Also, I feel that while children are reading along on Fuzwald and Rex’s adventure, they will learn that courage and teamwork worked well for the guinea pigs and will surely work for whatever they set their own minds to. They’ll walk away after reading this story and not even realize they just learned an invaluable lesson from their two fuzzy friends.
Right from the start, you hear and see the rhyming of the words and can’t help but fall into a sing-song cadence as you read along. This just adds another layer of fun for readers of all ages to enjoy.
The illustrations also done by St. James were provided on every page and were vibrantly colored, pulling readers in to see what Fuzwald and Rex were doing in that part of the story. The pictures were done in a cartoonish motif and reminded me of watching a cartoon show playout before your eyes as you turn the pages. As I was looking at the fun illustrations, I could imagine children giggling in delight while looking at what Fuzwald and Rex were doing next.
Ben St. James started drawing comics in his high school newspaper. Years later, he has a prolific career working with many independent creators such as authors, artists, game designers and even Olympians. He even has designed cartoon mascots and logos for many North American companies. In addition, he has been a ghostwriter and had multiple opportunities to be an illustrator for children’s books. This is his debut as an accredited author and illustrator of his own book.
Overall, Guinea Pig Power is one book that will delight readers of any age. Between falling in love with two adorable guinea pigs by day and them turning into amazing superheroes by night, what’s not to love with this fun animal adventure! It comes highly recommended!
