Ghosts in the Library by Patricia Y. Deering is a book about a popular library and the mysterious happenings in the place. Vonnie Talbot has been working in a public library for many years. She has seen many people come and go, even the homeless who view the library as a shelter. One day, a patron, a frequent member of the library named Jesus, told Vonnie about how he saw his dead wife in ghost form. Vonnie did not believe in ghosts so she did not think much of it, not until she was visited by her ex-husband, Caleb, who was already dead. He seemed to be all around her. She felt there was no reason for him to visit her even in his ghost form, considering the fact that they had cut off all ties when he was alive. One particular day, during a board meeting with the library workers, Vonnie had a heated argument with the library board president, Brad Roberts. After the meeting, they all headed out, but after that day, he was not seen again. What do you think happened to him? Do you think Vonnie had something to do with his disappearance? What about the ghosts? Do they know what happened?
Opinion:
After reading Ghosts in the Library, I would say that the book was very intriguing. At first it felt like I knew what the outcome was going to be since the story was going smoothly. After discovering Brad Roberts' lifeless body, all eyes were on Vonnie as the suspect, but it turned out to be something else. The first few chapters introduced Vonnie, the library and how it came about, and why many homeless people visited the library each day. The author's use of the alternating point of view (POV) in the book made it more creative as the characters were able to express their thoughts and their perspective throughout the story. The characters all played their given roles very well. Vonnie, a married woman who works in a library, is a caring woman. She displayed this quality when she defended her fellow workers against Brad Roberts' decision to get rid of the old workers and bring in new ones at lower salaries. Some characters' backgrounds and past relationships with Vonnie were explained in the book, and this helped me understand the story behind the characters and what they had gone through. There were also some supernatural beings included like the ghosts that were in the library. At first it felt weird and quite funny when I read about them, but later on, the help they rendered to Vonnie proved to be good. As an avid reader, I would say that the book is a must-read with an engaging mystery and surprising conclusion; it will definitely leave you stunned.
