LitPick Review
What Was Left Of Her is a captivating story about a young woman named Cassie, who had just lost her beloved aunt who was like a mother to her and her sister Alex. Their aunt, Lucie, was a beautiful woman of class and refined elegance, and anyone who knew her could attest to the fact that she seemed out of place in the small, downtrodden town where she spent most of her life. Why she never left was a mystery. How she died was a mystery. Why someone as kind and generous as she was, had such misfortune with her child Bella - whose reputation as a 'Wrong Child' cast a shadow over the family - was another puzzle. Cassie and Alex had to go back to Lucie's house to sort her things, but soon Cassie realizes that going back there meant confronting the ghost of the past, facing guilt and regret, and coming face to face with the memory of Bella who remained a trouble, even in death.
Opinion:
I got just what I wanted from this book. The fact that the book is not your regular ghost story is a 5 star for me. The detailing of the author was top notch although I feel like she gave too many details to some unimportant characters, but the more you can picture, the merrier. The book has a charm of blending you with the main character Cassie so much so that when she does an action, you already know what she thinks her sister's reaction would be even before you read it in the book! Also, the imagery in the setting is fantastic! The description is so vivid and detailed and it makes you feel nostalgic. The house has a character of it's own that reflects isolation and a place out of time. The book is filled with suspense, mystery, and a little bit of romance that came with dark twists and a lot of unanswered questions. Evocative!
