LitPick Review
Bryan Mooney’s Under the Christmas Moon intertwines family, hard work, service, duty, community, charity, veteran life, Christmas cheer, and love in his novel searching for the destinies of Garrett and Megan. Marine Sergeant Garrett Jackson finds himself stranded in the small Vermont town of River Junction on route to Montana, a place he used to call home. Out of concern for the impending across-country winter storm, Megan Maguire and her father search the bus for any unfortunately, stranded strangers. Garrett is now set on a path to decide to re-enlist in the Marines or to retire and start a new path for his life. Megan has her future just about secured for her, but she must discover the real path that her heart desires. Both Megan and Garrett must decide between the future they would love to have and the future they think they must settle for. Most importantly, they must choose if that future will include a great love and family. Journey through the beauty of this Vermont forest and small town as community and family come together.
Opinion:
Bryan Mooney’s Under the Christmas Moon is a quintessential Christmas novel just waiting to be made for the screen. Mooney details the beautiful small town winter forest of Vermont’s River Junction letting you feel the cold snow flakes dust across your nose as you crunch through the forest with Megan and Garrett. Mooney also lets you “taste” the delectable Christmas cookies, pies, and cocoas as Garrett cherishes the value of family. Join in with this book by reading it beside a crackling fire, hot cocoa, and hopefully a blisteringly, snow-filled storm outside. The omniscient narrator is the perfect guide as the reader is often wishing the characters knew everything to avoid assumptions. At times, the events are predictable but in a satisfying manner. As a reader, you are hoping for the predictable moments. However, Mooney does inject ample surprises to keep you turning page after page. Charmingly written, Under the Christmas Moon, details the community charity, hard work, beauty, and love for family found in many small towns across America. There is an immense respect for the Armed Forces and the men and women who have bravely protected our nation. A beautiful story where family, community, charity, service and duty all determine the future for love.
