My Own Lightning by Lauren Wolk is a story about a girl named Annabelle who lives in Western Pennsylvania in the year 1944. A man appeared at Annabelle’s schoolhouse looking for his dog named Zeus, which is a Bull Terrier breed. Annabelle's teacher sends her on her way to find Zeus. Annabelle is positive that she can find Zeus. On her way to find Zeus, an intense storm came.  On her way home, Annabelle unfortunately got struck by a lightning, but someone saved her life. After that incident, Annabelle learned that she got superpowers allowing her to understand what animals do, say, and feel. Annabelle sets out on a new journey of solving the mystery about who saved her life, and while doing that, she’s on search of the missing dogs.

Opinion:

My Own Lightning is  a well-written story by Lauren Wolk with amazing character development. In this story, there are feelings like anger, but there is also love and sympathy surrounding the mood and background. For Annabelle, it is really awesome having that superpower, and also her animal-loving character is really warm. I highly recommend this book to middle schoolers who enjoy a cozy family story with an energetic mood.
