The Cirque has always been Sasha’s favorite place. With its circus-like performances, the Cirque always gave her a magical sense of wonder – a feeling that made her never want to leave its tents. But now that Sasha has reached 5th grade, she is being sent to school with the ordinary children who live on her island, and they just don’t understand. The bullying that Sasha receives at school just for being part of the Cirque is making her start to question everything. Is the Cirque even magical at all? As the bullying increases, blue smoke starts to appear, and even though Sasha is told to stay away, she can’t help but wish that the smoke would take it all away…her family, the island, and especially the mean children at her school. One night, while Sasha is supposed to be helping her dad practice his act, the smoke comes. Listening to her wish, the smoke takes Sasha’s parents away, and now it is up to Sasha to find them.

Opinion:

This book reminds me of A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket. It is full of strange characters and has an interesting plotline. I really liked the concept of this book. It sounded like something that I would enjoy, though I have to say I was disappointed. It wasn’t as exciting as it was made out to be, and I found that I didn’t really like the main character. Sasha was pretty straight forward, and I would’ve liked her to be more interesting to learn about. I would recommend this book for younger readers, around 5th or 6th grade, rather than older readers, because they will probably find this book more relatable and enjoyable to read.
