Kidnapping, mental torture, rescue and expanded intelligence is the basis of life for teenage heroine, Riv.  Though freed and kept in safety by a gentler alien race,  her Aruk kidnappers are after her and the other 149 children again. She is sent to Earth for protection where she meets Dan, and they begin an amazing journey together as true friends.  Riv helps Dan achieve confidence and also helps him on a journey into his expanded intelligence.  Now they have become a force to be reckoned with by the enemy.  Riv and Dan are the future of the galaxy; together they will fight to keep it free from domination by the Aruk.

Opinion:

I really liked this book.  It is a message of hope, of hope for the future, and shows that it will be the younger generations that will lead the way.  The story is riveting, imaginative, and hopeful. I like how the author builds up the scenes as she is going along, rather than trying to give you the whole "concept" in the first few pages.  It sets up the entire story, but lets the story tell itself over the chapters, which is nice because you are not trying to remember every detail from the beginning of the book.  Over all, the friendship of Riv and Dan is what sets up this story to be exceptional.  It's the life long concept of sharing burdens, as in the song "Lean on me" by Bill Withers.  Afterall, life's travels do seem to be better when we share both the burdens and the joys with friends.

Explain your content rating:

Some people might be offended by the concept of torture, in any form. The torture is not physical, but mental. Over all, it is not grotesque torture, but conceptual torture such as being locked in a blacked out room, or feeding white noise so that a person isn't able to clearly think.
