Twelve-year-old Barana lives in the village of Pataya in Honduras. She loves to spend her time drawing, writing poems, and most importantly, working to protect the leatherback turtles who lay their eggs on the beach in her village. Unfortunately, her family doesn't understand her passion, and wants her to focus more on helping around the house than running off to the beach.
Salahudin and Noor are in their final year of high school in a rural California town. Noor survived an earthquake in Pakistan that decimated her entire village when she was 6 and has been living with the uncle who rescued her ever since. Noor’s uncle hates reminders of Pakistani culture and Muslim faith and berates Noor for her connection to them while forcing her to work at his liquor store. But Noor has a secret: she’s been applying to colleges across the country.
Thirteen-year-old Moth is kind of an outcast at school. She wants nothing more than to be a witch and spends her time watching TV shows about magic and reading about folklore. Then, on Halloween, something strange happens. When some kids at school are making fun of her, she *literally* takes their voices away.
